"My practice has evolved into an investigation that is centered around two guiding questions: What is the definition of Blackness? And what is its visual language?

To explore these questions, I turn both inward and outward; towards my own personal memory and family history and the collective heritage and culture. My practice explores these questions through a variety of mediums and is steeped in the textures and materials of the culture: hair, indigo, fabric, and ideas and inspirations from my family archives. Portraiture, poetry, abstraction, and mask-making are forms of art making that not only serve not only as forms of expression, but have become reoccurring tools in my ongoing exploration.

Each piece I create is an attempt to deconstruct this preconceived idea of Blackness that I've found quite unattainable and rebuild a comprehensive definition for myself. I create to highlight both the beauties and contradictions within the layers of Black identity. Rather than offering immediate resolutions, my work welcomes complexities. "
